Peter J. Holmes (1822-1879) from Southampton County, VA, and a member of the Philanthropic Society, entered the University in 1839 and graduated in 1842. He married Mary Eleanor Woodhouse (1825-1909) and became a planter, justice of the peace, and member of the VA General Assembly.
